Best free design tools

Free and freemium tools from the catalog that solo designers and makers can start with today.

Updated 2026-09-12

Free design tools are not charity versions of paid ones. The good ones are sharp at one job: open-source UI design, quick photo edits, whiteboarding, or a favicon before you open Figma.

This list is for people who will not pay Canva or Adobe yet, or who refuse to wait on a trial for a one-hour task. Every pick has a usable free path and a live product.

Freemium still counts when the free tier ships real work. Watermark hell and five-export caps do not.

For you if

Students, indie makers, and small teams who need real design output without a design budget this month.

Skip if

Agencies that need SSO, audit logs, and client permissions. Pay for Figma or Webflow and move on.

How we picked

  • Pricing marked Free or Freemium in the catalog
  • Browser or free desktop path
  • Still actively useful in 2026
  • Can finish a concrete task without hitting a paywall mid-flow

How we ranked, and who each pick is for

Free is a pricing field in our catalog, not a moral category. A tool makes this list when you can finish a concrete job without a credit card mid-flow. Watermark-on-export and five-download caps fail that test even if the marketing site says Free forever.

We include Freemium when the free tier is real work: open a PSD, draw a diagram, host a file, generate a favicon. We exclude freemium that is a demo of a paid product with the save button removed. That distinction is why Photopea and Penpot sit next to Remove.bg and not next to a trial of a full Creative Cloud suite.

The ranking criteria are written on the page because “best free tools” lists usually hide them. Browser or free desktop path. Still useful in 2026. Catalog pricing marked Free or Freemium. A task you can complete. We do not rank by GitHub stars or by how often a tool is mentioned in other listicles.

Penpot is first if your problem is a product canvas without a Figma bill. It is not first if your whole company already lives in Figma files. Photopea is first if your problem is a PSD in an email. Excalidraw and tldraw split the whiteboard job: docs versus embedding a canvas in your own product. Favicon.io and Remove.bg are here because they kill an hour of fiddling, not because they are design systems.

What we leave out on purpose: cracked Adobe, unlimited “free AI” sites that launder models, and student packs you lose when you graduate. We also leave out tools that are free only if you sit through a sales call. If your agency needs SSO, this is the wrong page. Pay for the suite and stop reading indie Twitter for permission.

Free tools still have vendor risk. Photopea can change. A hosted whiteboard can shut down. Self-host Penpot if lock-in is the actual fear. Export in open formats when you can. Do not build your only source of truth in a free UI you cannot leave.

A week-one stack for a student or indie maker: Penpot or Figma’s free tier for UI, Photopea for file emergencies, Excalidraw for RFCs, Favicon.io before you obsess over a custom mark. Add Remove.bg when product shots show up. That is enough to ship a landing page and a first UI without a design budget.

The category page for UI and product design is wider than this list and includes paid tools. Use it when you have money. Use this guide when you do not, or when you refuse to wait on a trial for a one-hour task. If a pick falls off the free tier, it falls off this ranking.

Best for a student: Penpot plus Photopea plus Excalidraw. That covers UI, file emergencies, and docs. Best for an indie hacker shipping a landing page: add Favicon.io and skip buying a brand kit until you have users. Best for a small team that already pays for Figma: this list is a backup and a PSD opener, not a reason to migrate.

We re-check the free path when we update the catalog. A product that hid export behind a paywall leaves the ranking even if the homepage still says free. That is the whole point of tying this guide to live pricing fields instead of a screenshot from 2023.

If you need a ranked paid list, use the other best-of pages or the category grid. If you need a role-ordered stack, use the indie hacker page under /for. This guide stays ruthlessly about finishing a job without a card.

A practical week on a zero budget looks like this. You open Penpot or the free Figma tier for the UI, Photopea when someone emails a PSD, Excalidraw when the RFC needs a picture, and Favicon.io before you obsess over a custom mark. Remove.bg is the hour you would have spent masking a product shot. That is a complete shipping week for a student or a solo founder. Anything else is optional until you have users or a client.

The ranking exists to protect that week. A tool that interrupts it with a paywall, a watermark, or a five-export cap is not free for the job. A tool that is free but cannot finish the job is a tutorial. We would rather list six tools that complete tasks than twenty that look generous on a pricing page.

After the first month, export your files. Self-host Penpot if lock-in worries you. Keep diagrams in a format your docs tool can still open if the whiteboard dies. Free software is not a reason to skip backups. It is a reason to be more careful, because there is no account manager to email when the host goes away.

When you get a budget, do not immediately replace this stack. Replace the one tool that is burning time. That might be the canvas, the photo editor, or nothing. The paid best-of pages and the category grids are there for that later decision. This page stays the no-card path.

Quick picks

  • If you Need a free Figma-like canvas→ Penpot
  • If you Open a PSD in the browser→ Photopea
  • If you Sketch architecture for a doc→ Excalidraw
  • If you Ship a favicon today→ Favicon.io
  • If you Cut a subject out of a photo→ Remove.bg

Where people get this wrong

  • Building a whole product UI in a whiteboard tool because it was free.
  • Assuming free forever means no vendor risk. Self-host Penpot if lock-in worries you.
  • Paying for a stock photo editor when Photopea already opens the file.
  • Skipping accessibility and export settings just because the tool costs nothing.
